“The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.” At its heart, education is not about filling minds with information, but about creating the conditions in which curiosity can flourish. When we see teaching as assisting discovery, the role of the educator shifts. We move from delivering answers to asking better questions; from directing every step to observing, listening, and responding. Learning becomes something the child actively does, not something that is done to them. This approach honours the natural drive children have to explore, experiment, and make meaning of the world around them. It recognises that understanding gained through discovery is deeper, more resilient, and more personal than information simply received. In home education especially, we are uniquely placed to practise this art. We can follow interests as they emerge, allow time for ideas to unfold, and trust that learning does not always look linear or tidy. Our role is to support, scaffold when needed, and step back when discovery is doing its work. Teaching, then, becomes less about control and more about connection. Less about outcomes, and more about the process of becoming a learner
