Is home education actually right for your child?

3 February 2026

Is home education actually right for your child? Home education has become increasingly common in recent years, it is often presented as a positive, flexible alternative to school — and for many families, it absolutely is. It can offer freedom, personalised learning, and a chance for children to thrive outside the pressures of the school […]

What is so wrong with home educators having a home visit? – What are they hiding?

2 February 2026

31/1/26 Over recent weeks, those of us campaigning against the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill have been subjected to a wave of hostility and misinformation. Home educators have been labelled “abusers”, “lunatics” and “morons”. We have been accused of hiding children away, and told that there is “loads of evidence” justifying mandatory home visits for […]

Home education about to change forever and not in a good way – here’s how you can fight it

30 January 2026

30/1/26 England and Wales, NOT Scotland will be affected by this. We are asked all the time for a template letter to use to send to MPs, however at this stage in the children’s wellbeing and schools bill a template is not going to do us any favours as you’ll get a generic response. Instead […]

For millennia, the family was the “default setting” for human development. It’s time to stop looking at home education as an “alternative” […]

Report on Home Education Numbers and Local Authority Enforcement (*edited 27/1/26 to include new data). Overview Our recent FOI data shows that the number of children being electively home educated (EHE) varies widely between Local Authorities (LAs), from small cohorts of a few dozen children to very large populations running into the thousands. Home education […]

The importance of home educators keeping communication with the LA in writing.

16 January 2026

Why Keeping Communication with the Local Authority in Writing Protects Home Educators One of the strongest pieces of advice we give families at Educational Freedom is simple: keep all communication with the Local Authority (LA) in writing. This is not about being difficult or uncooperative. It is about protecting your family, protecting other home educators, […]

The importance of deschooling – and not creating school at home.

14 January 2026

One of the most common missteps new home educating families […]

Is Home Education Really a Safeguarding Concern? Social Workers’ Perspectives

Is Home Education Really a Safeguarding Concern? Social Workers’ Perspectives

In our experience, it is not. The social workers we interviewed consistently stated that home education, in itself, is not a safeguarding issue. Even the government’s own research shows that home education is not a reason to be concerned about a child’s wellbeing.
