Worrying about making the decision to home educate? Scared you’ll fail your child? We ask you to reframe your thinking and consider what will happen if they stay in school? SEN not being met is not likely to miraculously suddenly start being sorted, you’ve battled for long enough, it’s ok to stop. Child being bullied, struggling with EBSA, bored, problems with their mental health, or things just aren’t right? Remember you don’t have to have tried everything to get them into school. Consider the harm being done, what will they realistically achieve staying in school? Even if they’ll pass their GCSEs, will their mental health be intact? It’s ok to prioritise your child. GCSEs are an option for home educators, and can be done at any age, 16 is just a school thing, working/uni life doesn’t have to suddenly start at 18, there’s not law that forces that, they can stay home ed until 19, do GCSEs or whatever they want at any time. Don’t delay doing what is right for your child just because you’re worried about the norm, genuinely, every single day we hear people say they wish they’d deregistered sooner, or never sent them to school to begin with. For many, the change in their child is quick, for others it takes time. But it happens. And remember, home education doesn’t have to be forever.
Science isn’t limited to labs or textbooks — it’s woven into the objects we use every day. A kettle demonstrates energy transfer. A bicycle shows forces, friction, and motion. A toaster reveals heat, electricity, and materials. When children explore how everyday items work, they begin to understand scientific principles in a meaningful, memorable way. Invite your child to choose one household object and investigate the science behind it. What materials is it made from? What forces act on it? What energy does it use? This kind of inquiry builds real world understanding and encourages children to see science as something alive and relevant. Which everyday object has sparked curiosity in your home recently?
Conversations are one of the most underrated forms of education. A single discussion can cover literacy, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, history, science, and more. When children talk through ideas, they learn to express themselves clearly, ask questions, and explore different viewpoints. Conversations also strengthen relationships, helping children feel heard and valued. Today, notice a moment where a simple chat turned into something deeper, a question that led to research, a story that sparked curiosity, or a shared reflection that helped your child understand the world a little better. What meaningful conversation happened in your home this week and where? Back of the sofa, car trip or dog walk?
