ckdated Child Benefit payments – Correction Exercise from 1 October 2025 In 2014, Child Benefit legislation was amended to align with changes made by the Department for Education (DfE) on the age of participation in education in England. The intention of the change was to ensure parents and guardians responsible for a young person participating in a ‘16-19 study programme’ in England could be entitled to Child Benefit. However, through an internal review, HMRC has identified that this change also unintentionally removed the requirement that a young person being educated in England outside a school or college, where a Local Authority has assessed the education being provided as suitable, must study for more than 12 hours a week. From 1 October 2025, HMRC is conducting a correction exercise to ensure anyone who missed out on Child Tax Credit or Child Benefit, can receive the money they are entitled to. Around 7 million families received Child Benefit last year. We have identified that a very small number, approximately 500, may not have been paid their correct entitlement. This affected families in England only. Those who may be due a payment of Child Benefit and/or Child Tax Credits will have been parents or guardians of a young person who was: Aged between 16 and 18 at that time, Living in England, Being educated somewhere other than a school or college (for example, at home), And where a Local Authority has, or had, assessed the education being provided as suitable. As we do not hold records of people who have been impacted, we would appreciate your help in reaching any eligible parents or guardians and encouraging them to contact HMRC as soon as possible. Parents and guardians who think they may have missed out on Child Benefit, can contact the Child Benefit Office Helpline by calling 0300 322 9620 or writing to HM Revenue and Customs — Child Benefit Office, PO Box 1, Newcastle upon Tyne NE88 1AA. Those who think they may have been eligible for Child Tax Credits, can contact the Tax Credit Office by calling 0345 300 3900 or writing to HM Revenue and Customs, Tax Credit Office BX9 1ER

Andy Burnham and Lucy Powell MP We openly invite you to talk with us, to understand from those it will impact, about the CWS act and the home education elements. We want this opportunity to explain just how it won’t protect those children it claims to, and how it will harm thousands of children and families. Talk to us, talk to other home educators, listen to the realities of home education rather than what those who had never met a home educator decided to bring into law.

During lockdown many kids struggled with learning subjects at home. One of the greatest events we discovered was watching the Royal Society perform experiments that could be created at home. It transformed my eldest view on science and he started to understand theories a lot more. With the heat this summer we thought we’d share one of our favourite ones. This is suitable for all ages and covers GCSE knowledge too so a perfect for the whole family.

Out and about as a home educating family? Our Home Education Cards help young people feel confident when engaging with venues, activities, and new experiences. Many venues accept our card as proof of home education, making conversations easier and helping young people advocate for themselves with confidence. Simple, practical, and easy to carry — perfect for everyday outings. An often heard argument is that these cards are not needed, and you’re right, they’re completely optional. But what they do is help nervous kids explain who they are when they’re out and about, they help when a venue requires some form of ‘proof’. Home edders (including us) campaign hard to ensure venues don’t ask for ‘proof’ but some don’t back down, and rather than needing a letter from your LA or missing out then our card will do. And, by buying a card from us it helps keep our service going for free, we have helped millions of people without charging them a penny, we have no fees for home educators. The few pence profit from each sale goes towards our website fees as we are a not for profit none of the team take a wage and we rely on sales and donations to carry on supporting you. If you don’t want to buy a card then don’t. You could donate via our website instead. You can buy the card on our website: www.educationalfreedom.org.uk

How true is this? I can still remember so much I learnt by myself as a child, books I read, films I only watched once, facts from museums, but from the classes at school myself? Very few. This is why I love home education, we can teach the way our kids learn, we can make it interesting for them and we can ensure they understand a topic before we move! Lessons can be forgettable but fun learning?! Never lost! #homeeddad #homeedmum #homeedplanning #learningfromhome #homeeducate #homeeducationrocks #homeeducationlife #homeedideas #homeeducationadventure #homelearning #learningathome #EducationalFreedom #homeeducationideas #homeeducationfamily #homeeducator #homeeducation #homeeducationuk #homeedfamily #homeeducating #unschooling
